ABOUT BUILDING BLOCKS CHALLENGE

The Building Blocks Challenge is a popular and effective team-building exercise designed to improve communication, reflect on leadership dynamics and enhance collaboration within teams. The goal of the challenge is to build a model as close to a provided diagram or prototype as possible, in a race against the clock and other teams, with exciting twists and obstacles designed to encourage participants to strategise and problem-solve.

FORMAT OF THE WORKSHOP

The intervention offers 2 customisable formats depending on the organisation’s requirements:

1. BUILDING BLOCKS
CHALLENGE

In this format, participants work in teams to build a model based on a provided sample within a set time frame. The challenge is intensified with twists like only one team member can see the sample and relay/ delegate instructions to others, or having a spy or derailer within the team and so on. The key insights involve collaboration and effective communication.

2. BUILDING BLOCKS CHALLENGE WITH SITUATIONAL LEADERSHIP

In this format, teams work to assemble a model under the guidance of a leader. However, some participants are briefed in advance to role-play specific behaviors thereby influencing the process. The key insights focus on how leaders perceive and respond to a range of behaviours exhibited by team members during the activity and how it impacts the team’s success.

* The second format requires preparation and planning in advance and requires a minimum of 20 participants.
* A similar activity can be conducted using Jigsaw Puzzles.
